10 more BTS Vans to improve mobile phone service

KATHMANDU, April 29, 2012

Nepal Telecom (NT) is to add 10 more mobile Base Transceiver Station (BTS) vans after successful trail in the capital. The operator had bought three vans earlier this year to asses their performance in overcoming poor quality of mobile phone service specially during mass gatherings.

Rajendra Nakarmi, deputy managing director of NT said "The performance of first three vans were satisfactory and we have asked the vendor to deliver 10 more vans so that the service can be expanded beyond the capital."

Thailand based A.L.T Inter Corporation Limited won the tender for the delivery of 13 vans last year at the total cost of the around Rs 350 million.

According to Nakarmi, the 10 new vans will be stationed in Biratnagar, Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Pokhara, Nepalgunj and Dhangadi. "We will send the vehicles to other places from the station as per the requirement," he said adding that the three vehicles already in operation will continue providing service in the capital.

The BTS van has the capacity to provide service to 1,000 lines at a time.

Along with the quality, which were excellent during the trial period, the operation of the van also contributed to additional revenue for the company, Nakarmi said.

According to NT officials, the use of these vans are not limited to providing better service during mass gatherings. "The vans could be more beneficial during times of natural calamities as other BTS might be affected or fail to operate," he said.
