The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has said that the trend of avoiding taxes by professionals working with international and national non-government organisations is on the rise.
Consultants who receive huge amounts as consultation fees are yet to come under the tax net, said director general at the department Tanka Mani Sharma, adding that the department is mulling options to bring them into the tax regime.
Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) are escaping tax compliance through various methods, said Sharma. “The department will take necessary action against such types of fraud.”
Non-governmental organisations and international non-governmental organisations sought a convenient procedure to pay their taxes in a recently organised interaction and the department will work on that, he said. The department, however, does not have the actual data of the amount of taxes not being paid by non-governmental organisations.
Meanwhile, the department is mulling to set up a separate revenue collection counter on the premises of professional organisations, if such organisations genuinely demand for one.
Some professional organisations, including Nepal Bar Association, have requested IRD to ease the taxpaying procedure, said Sharma, adding that the department can establish such counters but professional organisations must ensure tax compliance.
The country’s tax administration has been failing
to bring professionals and consultants under the tax net despite several attempts over the years.
