Western Union sponsors financial literacy project

KATHMANDU, NOV 21 - 2012

Western Union announced today that its corporate philanthropy arm, the Western Union Foundation, and Western Union agents in Nepal would fund a financial literacy project aimed at improving rural women’s ability to better manage financial risks and shocks and to benefit from micro enterprise creation and expansion.

The one-year programme will be conducted by Mercy Corps Nepal, an international, non-governmental humanitarian relief and development agency that works in the field of alleviating suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people to build secure, productive and just communities.

Organising a programme in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Western Union, Nepal said that the project would reach 1,200 women in two districts in the Eastern Region—Panchthar and Bhojpur—besides measuring the impact of financial literacy training in poverty alleviation.

Western Union, Nepal, in association with its agents Annapurna Travel and Tours, CG FINCO and Hulas Remittance, handed over a cheque for US$ 60,000 to Mercy Corps Nepal to complete the project.

The Western Union Foundation has granted matching funds. Patricia Riingen, Western Union senior vice-president, East and South Asia, handed over the cheque to Josh Dewald of Mercy Corps at the function.
